Labor Movement loses appeal

--A man by the name of John L. Lewis called a strike for his union members on November 1, 1919, his family previously being concerned with labor rights and benefits. Because of this man, coal miners received a 27% increase in their wages and John Lewis became a national figure --Many American attitudes toward unions and immigration changed after the increase of wages in the beginning of the 1920's. The membership of unions began to decline for many reasons; four being listed. Two reasons for the decrease were due to many workers at this time being immigrants who were willing to work in poor conditions and being difficult to organize because of the multiple languages. The third reason being the migration of farmers to cities for factory jobs, therefore being more self reliant. The fourth reason is many African Americans were in factory jobs, but most were excluded from being in unions. Less than 1%, eighty two thousand, had union memberships in 1929. -- To help organize African Americans into unions, Philip Randolph founded the Brotherhoof of Sleeping Car Porters in 1929. Despite the effort, union membership decreased even more about 1.5 million. ------Jackie
I think Jackie explained this well. Including Statistics is beneficial to the information being presented. The reasons for the decrease I agree with. I am not sure about the last bullet had to do with the decline in the appeal for the labor movement Kierstdea Furey
